The Northern Marianas quarters, the final coin in the District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters program, were struck at production facilities in Denver and Philadelphia. About 700,000 of the coins were released for circulation to the Federal Reserve Bank on Nov. 30 on the mainland U.S.
“These coins are going to generate more positive awareness of the Northern Marianas among the rest of the American public,” said U.S. Congressman Gregorio “Kilili” Camacho Sablan, Ind.-MP.
“Every time someone pulls one of these out their pocket they will be reminded that the Northern Marianas is beautiful and unique, and also just as much a part of this country as any other state or territory,” he said.
The congressman went to the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia last month to inspect the design of the new coin and to participate in striking the quarters.
Sablan toured the production floor with plant manager Marc Landry and met Phebe Hemphill, who sculpted the die used to cast the Northern Marianas quarter.
Those interested in purchasing bags or rolls of the Northern Marianas quarters may visit http://www.usmint.gov or call toll-free 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).
An official Northern Marianas quarter release event will take place on Dec. 10 on Saipan, where the public will also have a chance to purchase the coins or trade their old quarters for the new.
