Guam faithful hold protest vs abortion

The event, which was being held in conjunction with the nationwide Chain of Life, also marked the 37th year of the legalization of abortion following the  U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe vs. Wade ruling.

Leading the event was Archbishop Anthony S. Apuron, who noted that millions of babies or killed due to abortion and asked for the prayers of everyone for them.

“Pray for those who would’ve been 36 or 37 years but were not given the choice to live and were aborted,” he said.

Standing behind her fellow parishioners of St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church, Chilang Perez, 63, of Sinajana, reflected on the event and said she’s been participating every year.

“Abortion, it doesn’t matter what anybody says, women or otherwise, it is the murder of babies in the womb, the most helpless of all creations by God and this is wrong and we’re going to pay for it and we’re already paying for it as a nation,” she said.

Perez said they just try to raise up their voices to make everyone aware of the atrocities of abortion and also in prayer.

“God takes care of his own and all the children that are conceived and allowed to be in the world, whether aborted or not, are a planted seed of God,” she said.

The Sinajana parishioner said it’s not just a spiritual violation but has physical and mental impact on a woman’s life.

“It does create abnormal cases of cancer in a woman’s body and it also affects a woman psychologically afterwards so I stand out here and I will do it for the babies,” she said.

Just a few feet away, Monsignor David Quitugua, of Juan Bautista Catholic Church in Ordot, was elated to see so many people attend Chain of Life.

“It’s a good day to send out the message about the atrocity of having abortion legalized. It’s just really so bad to go to send our soldiers to harms way to Afghanistan and Iraq fighting for freedom and giving their lives for something that is worthwhile and then to have people killing innocent babies, I can’t really fathom how some contradictory our people live,” said Quitugua.

He adds that the church really needs to stand up and tell the people abortion is wrong.

“As long we know the truth and say the truth, there is nothing to fear,” the Monsignor said.  “This really is just to make people aware of what they’re doing.”
