Traffic violation leads to recovery of stolen car

Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth Govendo yesterday imposed $10,000 bail on Manuel D. Quitano, 23, who was arrested in Susupe by the police on Jan. 8.

Govendo remanded Quitano to the custody of the Department of Corrections after he failed to post bail.

Quitano was directed to return to court on Jan. 25 for his arraignment.

He was arrested for burglary, theft, and theft of a vehicle.

Assistant Attorney General Kathleen Busenkell is prosecuting the case while Chief Public Defender Adam Hardwicke has been appointed by the court to represent Quitano.

In his statement of probable cause in support of issuance of an arrest warrant, Detective Buddy Igitol said Sgt. Joaquin Camacho was traveling south on Beach Road Chalan Laolao when he  observed that a white Toyota Echo was traveling south in a reckless manner on Dec. 11, 2009, at about 1:18 a.m.

When Camacho activated his emergency lights and sirens and attempted to execute a violator stop on the car, the driver, later identified as Quiatano, picked up speed and tried to elude the pursuing police.

It turned out that the car being pursued had been reported as a stolen vehicle.

The pursuit ended in Koblerville, police said.

Camacho, together with Sgt. Anthony Macaranas, arrested the Quitano.

Quitano told police that he was too drunk to walk so he took the Toyota Echo.

He also took the pants of the car’s owner. Among the valuables left in the car were $130 cash and car keys.
