Fyke Sabino, a former Century Hotel bar supervisor, was the award’s first recipient. He received $50 and a certificate during Pilcowa’s Appreciation Night and Valentine’s Party at the Kilili Pavilion.
Among the guests were Philippine Consul Belinda Ante, labor representative Carmelina R. Francisco Velasquez and welfare officer Rey Tayag.
Sabino was commended for helping revive an 18-year-old student who was suffering from severe asthma allergy.
Pilcowa president Jun Concillado said Sabino used his knowledge regarding first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Pilcowa is now coordinating with the American Red Cross to give recognition to Sabino, Concillado said.
“This program will encourage others to do laudable, noble and community-oriented acts,” he said.
In an interview, Sabino said it’s “an instinct” of any person to help those who are in dire need, especially in a life-threatening situation.
But it’s an advantage if you know basic first aid and CPR, he said, as he encouraged those who have taken the CPR course to always “refresh” their knowledge.
Pilcowa also presented awards and certificates to the supporters of the 2009 Pilcowa Basketball League, the participating teams, referees, committees, sponsors, media personalities, and the group’s officers.
Among those who were commended were Alredo Cordinera, Imelda Estolas, Jaypers David, Dino Garcia, Dante Olivos, Ed Yalung, Enrico Morales, Jojo Garon, Ronnie Doca, Ferdie Muleta, Nick Riveral, Ramon Liangco, Beth Directo, Andrew Mesina, Archie Rosario, Lito Angeles and Walter Mckaskell III.
