Webb evaluates Guam situation

During his meeting with local senators at Speaker Judi Won Pat’s office, Webb said he has always believed that the U.S. military must very sensitive to the citizens of countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

Webb is no stranger to Asia and the Pacific. He told Guam lawmakers about his long experience in Japan, Okinawa and Guam, on both the diplomatic and military fronts, spanning a period of more than 40 years.

Webb chairs the Senate Committee on Armed Services Personnel Subcommittee and the Committee on Foreign Relations East Asian and Pacific Affairs Subcommittee.

He told local senators that the purpose of his visit was to listen to the leadership of Guam and the views of the island’s people and those of the neighboring islands. He said he wanted to know the military buildup’s impact.

Webb also met with Gov. Felix P. Camacho and members of the Civilian-Military Task Force in Adelup.

Webb said he hope to be able to help resolve the difficulties facing Guam regarding the buildup.

He told Guam senators that he spent most of his life dealing with strategic issues of the U.S. in this region of the world.

The U.S. senator shared with lawmakers that during his visit to Japan, the leadership of the new government there spoke about the importance of the Japan-U.S. alliance. 

While in Okinawa, Webb said he spoke with leaders about the planned relocation of Futenma Air Base.

Webb is a strong proponent of the vital interests served by a healthy U.S.-Japan relationship, according to a press release.
