Yap begins planning for canoe festival

This will be the first formal meeting of the planning committee since it elected its new officers during an informal meeting held last month.

During that meeting, the committee  decided to start sending out invitations to outside guests so they would have enough time to make adjustment on their schedules. Members of the committee feel that the sooner the invitations are send out the better because then all preparations and arrangements on their part will be done earlier.

On the “theme” issue, Yap Traditional Navigation Society suggested “Reviving Traditional Technology.”

However, some members of the planning committee were concerned that the word “reviving” may not sound appropriate because instead of the competitors or participants learning those skills that will be performed or demonstrated during the festival they already possess them.

Members of the committee said these skills have always been in the heart of Yapese from generation to generation.

Among the issues that will be discussed in the meeting today is the number of subcommittees.

The planning committee has agreed in its previous meeting that it will merge some of the subcommittees to have at least two or three of them.

The organizing committee said that to have more than three to four subcommittees would just duplicate the first Yap Canoe Festival in which some of the subcommittees were not functioning effectively.

The committee will also reconsider the logo for the canoe festival. Once all the members decided and agreed to use the same logo as the first festival then that will become the permanent logo for the annual event.
