KOROR (Palau Horizon) – Twelve-year old David Blesam and his pets is the subject of a children book that was published last month.
Blesam, a sixth-grader student of the Airai Elementary School and his pets- a dog named Lilo, a rooster named Airwolfe and a fruit bat called Olika are the stars of the self-published children ‘s book “An Island Boy and his pets.”
Cassandra Bloedel who used to reside in Palau with her husband and son helped write and publish a book based on David’s adventure with his pets.
Bloedel in an email message told Horizon that all royalties from purchase books will go into a special scholarship fund for David.
The book can be ordered from Amazon.com and cost about $8.
“My husband and I know economics are hard everywhere, and David has some amazing pets…a fun dog, a once wild rooster, and a fruit bat raised from a baby. David can talk to the bat and she flies around but comes back to him. The rooster likes to sit on the bat cage and seems to communicate with it…we don’t know…but it seems that way. David is a bright young man, and the youngest of several older siblings but life as it is in Palau is very different then the hustle and busy fast-paced life of any American city,” Bloedel said.
David who wants to be a soldier someday is proud of his pets.
“They are my best friends,” David said in an interview.
He said that in the book, he told the stories of how he has acquired his pets and his adventures with them.
Joshua Blesam, David’s father said Cassandra is a next door neighbor who assisted his son to come up with the book.
“She encouraged David to write, help him edit it and brought in back to the States for publishing,” Blesam said.
David said he is excited to see the book.
Cassandra is now back in the United States doing environmental work for the Navajo Nation in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah.
Cassandra’s husband Daniel and son Ian still reside in Palau until her husband completes his tour of duty with the USDA, NRCS field office
“David is such a person who will one day earn his degree in whatever he wants to pursue. I knew other children in the US do not know that their pets are just as loved as David loves his pets. It is getting children to open up and structure their talents. Yes, stories are told but few written,” Cassandra said.
