6th Annual Mahi Fishing Derby set for April 10

About 40 boats are expected to launch in the one-day trolling event at the Smiling Cove Marina and will cruise around the island from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

MVA said there’s still time for fishermen to get their bids in to win cash prizes or just enjoy a day on the water.

The pre-registration and orientation for the trolling event will be on April 9 at the Smiling Cove Marina from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., where SFA officials will also provide a briefing on the derby Rules and Regulations.

The derby will consist of five categories.

Cash and in-kind prizes will be awarded for all top five finishers, including $1,500 for first prize.  The entry fee is $100.00 for one captain and a crew of three, with an additional $25.00/per angler.

Spectators are invited to see the day’s catch as fishermen begin returning to Smiling Cove Marina at about 4 p.m. on derby day.  The awards banquet will take place after the derby at the marina weigh station from 6-9 p.m.

Registration forms are available at the MVA office, Fishing Tackle in Susupe, or Best Fishing in Garapan.  All participating boats must observe safe boating rules and regulations, as failure to do so may result in the disqualification of the boat from the derby.  A registered boater will not qualify for reimbursement if disqualification is due to negligence in furnishing the required safety equipments and current boating registration.

For more information about the event or an electronic registration form, contact MVA’s  Frank Tudela at 1 (670) 664-3200, or  [email protected].
