Hasselback has declined to explain why he quit the AG’s Office. Attorney General Edward Buckingham and Chief Prosecutor Rosemond B. Santos have referred this reporter to the governor’s office which has yet to reply to Variety’s inquiries.
Assistant Attorney General Kathleen Busenkell resigned some two weeks ago.
It is unclear who will represent the government for tomorrow’s continuance of the hearing on the motion to open a case against Vicente T. Aldan, 52.
Hasselback was prosecuting the case when he tendered his resignation on Friday.
Aldan, the husband of former Corrections Commissioner Dolores San Nicolas Aldan, has yet to surrender the firearm he used against his former domestic partner as required by his plea agreement.
Mr. Aldan has been serving his six-month imprisonment since Dec. 2009 without the possibility of parole. He is expected to be released on June 7, 2010.
After he filed the motion to open a case against Mr. Aldan last month, Hasselback told Judge Wiseman last week that the government was withdrawing the motion.
When asked why, Hasselback said he didn’t know and the court should talk to his supervisor — Santos.
Hasselback later told reporters that he “was told to withdraw the motion.”
