Man in sexual abuse case gets 4 years imprisonment

After serving his sentence, Alvin Atalig Pinaula will be placed on 10 years of supervised release, Presiding Judge Robert A. Naraja said.

In addition, Pinaula will perform 1,500 hours of community work — the first 750 hours at the Corrections facility and the remaining 750 hours after his incarceration.

Naraja told Pinaula that the 1,500-hour community work should provide the defendant time to reflect and “walk a

straight life.”

Naraja accepted the plea agreement signed by Pinaula who admitted guilt to two counts of sexual abuse of a minor

in the second degree.

The remaining charges of two counts of sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree were dismissed by the court as

part of the plea agreement.

The incident happened in 2003 and 2008, the plea agreement stated.

Pinaula is ineligible  for parole during the first three years of imprisonment, the court ordered.

The court credited the time Pinaula already served at the Corrections facility — seven days.

Pinaula will start his prison term on April 12. He is expected to be released on April 12, 2014.

Assistant Attorney General William Downer, who prosecuted the case, told the Variety that the plea agreement aimed to serve the “best interest of justice.”

Pinaula was represented by Assistant Public Defender Matthew Holley.

Pinaula will write a letter of apology to his victim and will not have any contact with his victim and the victim’s relatives.

He will register as a sex offender and must inform the Department of Public Safety if he relocates after serving his sentence.

He will pay a $100 fine, the court cost of $100, and the $1,200 probation fee.

Pinaula will undergo counseling and treatment while in jail.
