NMI’s Frank Camacho bags gold in Jiu Jitsu world championship

Known also as the Mundials, the competition ran like a tournament in which a fighter wins one fight to the next to advance to the finals.

Camacho fought six fights in the Blue Belt Division’s 181 pounds with the Gi and beat all his opponents including his team mate DJ Jackson against whom he ended up fighting for the gold.

“This was the tournament I was training for all this year for. This is where the best of the best meet up and compete for that World Title in their divisions. I was super stoked and happy. The months and months of preparation paid off,” Camacho said in an email.

Camacho started with an easy win as he defeated his first opponent in 30 seconds in the first match via Kimura submission. This was followed by another winning fight where he sent his opponent to submission via back bow and arrow choke.

This third victory also came handy via Kimura submission.

Then, he went up to face a tough wrestler in his fourth fight. The opponent did not turn out to be that tough however, as Camacho took him down to pull a 2-0 victory.

In the semifinal which Camacho believed was a “super tough” match, he faced a Judo Black Belt from Mongolia.

“It was a ridiculously strong and amazing Judo. I ended up sticking to the game plan Master Lloyd put together for this guy and reversed him to a dominant position scoring me the two points for the 2-0 win,” Camacho recalled.

Camacho and his team mate Jackson, who closed out the 83-man middle weight division ended up fighting for the gold in the finals.

Camacho scored two points with an ouchi mata judo throw to win the 2010 World Championships.

The NMI’s only MMA fighter who have gone this far, Camacho said he has been very active in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu circuit doing a lot of local tournaments like the Grapplers Quest, North American Grapping Championships and many other tournaments of such sort, including the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation tournaments—main tournament every jiu jitsu fighter in the world strive for.

Camacho’s bit tournament triumphs include Japan Tokyo Jiu jitsu championships where he won gold; New York International jiu jitsu championships where he bagged silver and last week’s 2010 BJJ World Championships (Mundials) for his second gold.

After this biggest feat in his fighting career so far, Camacho plans to keep on working his jiu jitsu game as well as his stand up, wrestling, and other martial arts with Team Lloyd Irvins Mixed Martial Arts Academy in Camp Springs Mary Land.

“My ultimate goal is still mixed martial arts,” Camacho said.

“Thank you so much to my mom, dad, sister, and brother-in-law for all the love and support,” Camacho said.

“The “fighter” lifestyle is the path I chose and is a very different one. I thank them for dealing with everything I go through. To Trench Tech Purebred Saipan, Cuki Alvarez and the boys, there would be no Frank The Crank without them,” he added.

He also thanks Roman and Fokai Industries for all the support, his friends and family.

“Si yu’us ma’ase! Thank you most especially to the people back home in the Marianas! You all are my motivation to keep on keepin on! Thank you for beleiveing in your native son. For all the love and support,” Camacho said.
