First Hawaiian Bank to donate $40,000 in scholarships

Horner is on island to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the bank.

A total of forty, $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to 2010 graduates of public and private high schools on Guam and Saipan.  The scholarships will be awarded to the students based on need.  Applications will be available beginning July 1, 2010 through the University of Guam’s admissions office.

“Our young people represent Guam’s greatest strategic asset. We view these scholarship monies as an investment in Guam’s bright future,” Horner said.

“It is a mark of First Hawaiian Bank’s generosity and continuing contribution to our island’s growth to invest their resources into where it matters the most; higher education. The University is grateful and future generations will benefit from this terrific contribution,” said Dr. Robert A. Underwood, UOG president.

First Hawaiian Bank continues to demonstrate its commitment to its home communities by being one of the top contributors to local charities in Micronesia.  In addition to financial support, the bank encourages its employees to volunteer their time and talent by serving on non-profit boards and routinely gives them time off to support these non-profit causes for the benefit of its local communities.  Each year the bank’s employees donate over a half million dollars to local charities in Hawaii, Guam and Saipan through its in-house employee giving campaign called, “Kokua Mai.”

First Hawaiian Bank, with $14.3 billion in total assets, is the largest bank on Guam in terms of loans and deposits.

The bank has been providing service, solutions and security to our island communities for over 150 years.

UOG was founded in 1952 and is the only U.S. accredited four-year university located within the Western Pacific.  As a U.S. land-grant institution accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the university offers 35 undergraduate and 15 graduate level degree programs.  UOG was recently awarded an eight-year accreditation in 2009 and has a student enrollment of over 3,550, the highest since 2000.
