Letter to the Editor: Discriminated

Mr. Sablan, you interviewed me last February 22, 2010 at the Guam Medical Referral Office. After the interview you told me that I would most likely be hired because I met all your expectation answering all your questions with a positive response.

After a week, I called to follow up with the vacant position that you interviewed me for. You said that you needed more time because you needed to request three more qualified applicants from the Office of Personnel Management. You said that it was mandatory to have a minimum of five qualified applicants interviewed as it was a requirement by law.

Three weeks later I called you. You told me that you did not receive any list of qualified applicants from the Office of Personnel Management. Then you said I should call back in a week. A week later I called you and it was that time that you asked me if I was on my way. I asked you what did you mean. I said to you, are you asking if I am pregnant and you said yes. You even asked me why I did not tell you during the interview that I was pregnant. At that moment I felt that you were using my pregnancy as your excuse not to consider me for the position.

In another instance, I called you on March 25, 2010 to follow up on the vacant position. It was that time you told me that there was no budget for the position. I couldn’t believe that you had the guts to tell me that. If there was no budget then why did you come to Guam to interview me for the position I applied for?  In addition, there was a vacancy announcement put out for the position. In case you didn’t know the vacancy announcement number for the Medical Referral Assistant  is EA#09-142.

Giving me all those excuses of needing three more qualified applicants and telling me “no budget,” I felt that you were dragging your feet and buying time so that I could just forget about the position. I really don’t know what your motive is but I will not forget nor will I give up because I hope that after you have read this letter, you will feel some remorse. I also intend to file a complaint with the EEOC and the public auditor. I’ve already wrote to OPM Director Mr. Isidro Igisomar to investigate your actions.

Lastly, you said there was no budget for the position that I applied for so then you spent taxpayer money by traveling to Guam to interview me and another applicant? Am I right or wrong?
