“PHS received its first accreditation in 2007 and we’re up for renewal this year,” said Nancy Camacho, Self Study Coordinator for WASC Accreditation. The first three-year accreditation ends in July this year.
Dr. James Denight, Visiting Committee Chairman, and Lourdes San Nicholas were in the country to see how Palau High School is doing and at the same time to collect evidence for the school’s reaccreditation.
The purpose of the accreditation is to ensure that the school is worthy of the trust given to them to provide high quality learning opportunities.
Camacho said the WASC accrediting team looked at the school’s critical issues and whether or not it has accomplished the recommendations that it was given during the previous accreditation. She added that the school is hoping to receive accreditation for another three years.
According to Camacho, in order for the school to pass the accreditation, there are certain things that it needed to improve on, such as the student learning and school renovations.
One example, she said, is the fence construction which will be completed in June. Other buildings in PHS are also not currently in use because they’re being renovated.
During the visit of the WASC members, they were treated to a dinner reception by President Johnson Toribiong at Palasia Hotel on Thursday.
Camacho added that PHS will hear back the result from the accreditation team within two weeks to one month.
