Proposed slash is pay hike a “skit”- Remengesau

In the president’s Fiscal Year 2011, proposed budget, he said slashing 10 percent from the salaries will save the government $195,000.

In the FY2010 supplemental budget, the salaries of the president, vice president and ministers were raised. The combined pay hike is over $100,000.

Remengesau has opposed the salary increase, but Toribiong said that it was the OEK who has proposed the increase.

He said the pay increases commensurate with their responsibilities and granted as a matter of equity and logic.

After the pay increase, Toribiong is now receiving $90,000; Vice President, $65,000; and Ministers; $50,000.

Toribiong said either members of the Congress reduce their compensation, or the executive branch increase their salaries.

Members of Congress are receiving annual salaries of $50,000 each.

Remengesau said he agrees with Toribiong that members of Congress should reduce their pay hike.

The president said he ordered a slash in the pays to balance the budget.
