Man gets 12 years for sexual abuse of minors

A jury found Shafiqul Islam guilty of sexual assault of a minor in the first degree, and attempted sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree on March 11, 2010.

Superior Court Associate Judge David A. Wiseman sentenced Islam to 15 years imprisonment for count one, all suspended except for 10 years, provided that eight years is mandatory with no parole.

For count two of the offense, Wiseman imposed five years jail term, all suspended except two years. Both sentences will run consecutively.

“Our society has declared a campaign against child abuse and this court supports such campaign as it is not an activity that is or can be a part of this society’s traditions,” Wiseman said in his written ruling released yesterday.

Islam will receive credit of 174 days for time served at the Department of  Corrections since his arrest last Oct. 2009.

Islam is expected to be released from prison on Nov. 25, 2021.

Islam’s family and friends requested that the defendant be sent back to Bangladesh, his native country. “To accommodate such requests of his family and friends to just send [Islam] home would be inconsistent with applying equal justice,” Wiseman said. “This is not serving the ends of justice.”

During yesterday’s sentencing hearing, Assistant Attorney General Jennifer Dockter represented the government while Islam was represented by the Public Defender’s Office. Assistant Attorney General Brian Gallagher, currently off-island, prosecuted the case.
