U.S. Congress to begin hearing on Palau’s Compact package

KOROR (Palau Horizon) – THE UNITED STATES Congress Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, and the Global Environment will conduct their first hearing on July 29 on the proposed financial package for Palau in the next 15 years under the Compact of Free Association.


President Johnson Toribiong said yesterday that American Samoa CongressmanEni F.H. Faleomavaega has informedthe Palau government of the first scheduledbudget hearing.

The president said the government will be sending its Palau team to attend the hearing.

Although the team is not scheduled to testify, attendance is anopportunity tolobby for support to the proposed Compact aid.

Frankie Reed Deputy Assistant of the U.S. Secretary of State is scheduled to testify during the first hearing.

Attending the hearing from the Palau team are Haruo Wilter, Polycarp Basilius, George Ngiraklsong , Consultants Jeffrey Farrow andKevin O’ Keefe.

Palau has accepted a $250 million financial package in January for the next 15 years; the signing however of the agreement is still pending due to minor kinks that need to be ironed out between the two parties.
