Zero-junk vehicle program launched

Although estimates vary on the total number of junk vehicles on island, officials said there may be 10,000 to 14,000 of them.

Once a junk vehicle is posted with a neon-colored notice of violation, the owner has 28 days to remove the vehicle, or within 48 hours after being notified if within the public right of way.

Saipan Mayor Donald Flores, Zoning Board Chairwoman Herminia Fusco, and acting Zoning Administrator Therese Ogumoro led the ceremonial launch at the Garapan Fishing Base yesterday.

They were joined by other members of the Zoning Board, and representatives of two recycling companies: Eric Cruz of Basula Producto and Tony Reyes of Triple Star.

“This program’s implementation is long awaited for. We are going to ensure that these eyesores get removed as soon as possible so we can restore the beauty of our island,” said Ogumoro.
