Letter to the Editor: Public hearings on Interior’s recommendations

One of the proposals suggested by a close ally to the U.S. Virgin Islands before the U.S. subcommittee hearing was a law granting permanent residency to 20,000 nonresident workers in 1982, which supposedly set a precedent.

Again, the same question, what will happen in 10 years should another group of nonresident workers demand status?

The same scenario or precedent will be used if we do not stand up today and voice our concerns.

The village public hearings now being conducted by our Senate committee members are critically and seriously important and I am urging each and one you to please attend the hearings and let your voices be heard.

Remember that in the beginning, this entire federal immigration control was concerning national security and border control. Today’s concentration is on permanent residency and citizenship.
