Speaking to the Fiji Sun, the Pacific nation’s military ruler Commodore Frank Bainimarama confirmed that plans are already underway to continue with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces engagement with China’s People’s Liberation Army.
“China has already trained some of our officers which we send every year and we wish to continue with that,” Bainimarama said.
He indicated that with strengthened ties between the two countries could mean that more opportunities for soldiers to train there.
Bainimarama said for now the focus is to build up that relationship with China.
Already, last week it was confirmed that the Chinese government is on the verge of releasing a $5 million grant to the military’s engineering unit.
Bainimarama said the grant would be used to improve the standards of their engineering unit. He said this would assist the military’s engineering unit to carry out development works in the rural areas as they now have the equipment to do so.
