Kilili: More work must be done for NMI

The former Commonwealth Election Commission executive director and House member is the CNMI’s first delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Under his term, the CNMI secured millions of dollars in stimulus funds and convinced the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to parole Russian and Chinese tourists so they can visit the islands despite not having a U.S. visa.

“We just started the work,” said Sablan in an interview yesterday and expressed hope that his constituents will give him another chance to serve them.

“I wish I could say that we’ve gotten everything we wanted but we haven’t yet,” he added.

Sablan, an independent candidate, is running against former Gov. Juan N. Babauta of the Republican Party, former Lt. Gov.  Jesus C. Borja of the Democratic Party, and former Rep. Joseph James N. Camacho of the ruling Covenant Party,

Sablan said his office continues to explore possibilities to help the people of the Northern Marianas get better services in terms of education, infrastructure, public health, among other things.

He plans to actively campaign for his re-election bid next month when the U.S. Congress goes on recess.

“I’ll be back in August. The whole month of August we will be on recess,” he said.
