TakeCare won a trophy and $300 cash which it then donated to Make-A-Wish Foundation, the beneficiary of this year’s event.
The Hyatt Regency team won a trophy and $200 cash for winning second place, while the Mariana Islands Nature Alliance team won a trophy and $100 for placing third.
Ten of the 12 registered teams participated in the completion. The teams, which included Gresco, Shell Marianas, the Marianas Variety, the Saipan Rotary Club, Northern Marianas College, the Pacific Islands Club and KSPN, started building their sandcastles at 8 a.m.
This year’s theme was “A Child’s Wish.”
Australia’s master sand sculptor Dennis Massoud was this year’s special guest.
He conducted a sandcastle demonstration and classes on Friday to provide the participants with tips and techniques.
The judges were Massoud, Victor P. Camacho, executive director of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Guam, and Saipan board member Desirae Herrera.
The entries were judged based on the creators’ sculpting skills, consistency and competency, creative use of the site and maximum plot use, originality and creativity. Entries sculpted to the furthest limitation of the sand medium also earned points.
Camacho said he was very grateful to the Sandcastle for Wishes 2010 for partnering with them in helping make children’s wishes come true.
“We also appreciate TakeCare Insurance for donating their $300 prize. This can do a lot for the foundation,” he said.
The Sandcastles for Wishes 2010 was presented by TakeCare Insurance. This year’s sponsors were the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Hyatt Regency Saipan, Gresco, Shell Marianas, and the Marianas Variety.
