Malae: CUC to address water issues

“Slowly and surely we will get there,” he said, referring to full compliance with the federal requirements.

He said CUC is replacing  leaky pipes and locating and repairing leaks.

“Even though the primary water quality standards have been met, having water that is brackish is not desirable,” Malae said.

Seventy percent of their customers have access to water 24 hours a day, he added.

He said rationing for other 30 percent is not a desirable option but this represents an improvement from the past when only 30 percent of customers had water 24 hours a day.

CUC’s capital improvement and operational goal is to provide running water that meets safe drinking water primary standards to all customers 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Malae added.

This month, CUC distributed its water quality report to the community.

CUC water and wastewater division chief engineer Robert J. Lorenz said as seen in the report, “every year we have good improvements.”

CUC water and wastewater manager Mariano Iglecias said the report is a great source of information about the islands’ water system.

However, Iglecias said he noticed that some of their reports are not being read.

“It’s really frustrating — these are the same people who clamor against CUC but they don’t take the time to read the report,” he added.

He encouraged members of the community to read the water quality reports distributed to them.
