Yap sets state elections for Nov. 2

The election is for the governor and lt. governor, members of the state legislature and mayor and council members for the municipality of Rull, the only municipality in Yap that has been chartered to run its own local government.

The election commissioner’s office has indicated in its statement that it has already opened the filing of nomination petitions which will close on Tuesday Aug. 3, 2010.

Under Title 7 of the Yap State Code, nomination petition “shall be filed during normal government working hours not more than 180 days nor less than 90 days prior to the day of election, except in the case of substitution of candidates in which case the new candidates must be nominated prior to 10 days before the election date.”

According to other reports provided by the commissioner’s office, one team has filed for the gubernatorial seat so far while four have filed for the senatorial seats in the state legislature. Among the four candidates who have filed to compete in the state general election are three incumbents and one new candidate.

The election office is informing all possible candidates about some requirements attached to the issue of nomination petition. The office has stated that the number of people required for signing a petition for governor/lt. governor “shall not be less than 100 registered voters and the number required for a nomination petition for Legislature shall not be less than 25 but could be more.”

The office is also advising all possible candidates for the gubernatorial seat to pay the $200 fee either to the office upon filing of nomination petition or to the state treasury office prior to filing.
