Letter to the Editor: Allow the people to vote on the buildup

think that a referendum is due in order to determine what the people of Guam really want. The cost of such a referendum is nothing, compared to the possible negative consequences of the relocation.

Though it often appears that the U.S. military think they “own” Guam, it is a very undemocratic process that would deny the people of Guam a plebiscite on this issue. Our military often touts itself as the primary purveyor of democracy worldwide. Here is an excellent chance to polish those credentials. In fact, funding such a plebiscite would only detract from those that still view the relationship between Guam and the U.S. as one of a colonial nature.

Let’s find out once and for all what the majority of the people of Guam want, not just a few opportunist business owners. If we can hold “special elections” over ethical violations that are unfortunately historically commonplace and only pursued for political reasons, then we can surely bring the proposed buildup to a vote.
