The discriminatory target population is the group over the age of 18 for cigarettes, and over the age of 21 for alcohol; of which the totality of these particular groups are not even consumers of the products. The majority does not smoke or drink. The population below these two groups is completely ignored and exempt from the tax. An often used absurd argument given us by these clever politicians is that a heavy tax will raise the cost of these goods so high that young people can’t afford them. Come on, does the high cost of drugs deter their use?
The purpose of this letter is certainly not to condone the use of either product; rather, to suggest a more equitable and profitable alternative.
SWEET TAX. The majority of our population, from cradle to grave, consume sugar products; i.e.: candy, cookies, cake, pies, sodas, etc…. Thus, a huge target population, and hence, Major Revenue! Is this rocket science? Let’s not discriminate; but instead, give everyone a chance to contribute to the additional funds which our politicians feel they so desperately need. Obesity, and subsequent diabetes, has become an epidemic in the CNMI. Is this not a sin? If so, why has one of its major causes (sugar products) not been included in the above group? If it is not a sin, then we need to initiate a new ploy and name it. “Sweet Tax.”
In conclusion, to our “honorable” politicians, can you not do the math to figure out the potential increase of revenues by attacking the sugar consuming population?
Oh Duhhhh…..
