Parental involvement key to student learning

“We are the strongest voice for our children. We can and should help [the Public School System] give our children the best education possible,” said Laura Manglona, president of Sinapalo Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Student Association.

Augusta Famaw, who heads Tinian Elementary School’s parent association, agreed.

“Parents should understand the important role we play in our children’s education,” she said.

Kimo Rosario, PSS parental involvement coordinator, said they continue to help parents who want to do more for their children’s education.

In 2008 the Board of Education adopted policy 1460 that identified  parental involvement and community partnership as top priorities.

Yesterday, parent leaders from  public elementary, junior and high schools, including the Head Start Policy Council and the Special Education State Advisory Panel, elected a new set of Parental Advisory Council officers to serve a two-year term.

Editha Taimanao, PTSA president for Dr. Rita H. Inos Jr. Sr. High School, was unanimously elected as council president.

Also elected were William S. Reyes Elementary School PTSA president Janice Tenorio vice president,  Famaw as secretary, and Fausia Dela Cruz of Hopwood Jr. High School as treasurer.

Rosario will serve as an ex-officio member of the council.

“We have witnessed how your voice have led to the many successes that our schools and students are enjoying today. We still need your strong voice,” Education Commissioner Rita A. Sablan told the parents.

“We continue to enjoy a strong partnership and relationship with  parents,” she noted.

Frances Ulloa, former Tanapag Elementary School principal, used to oversee the PSS parental involvement program until Rosario was named to the post.

“We are very fortunate for the leadership of Kimo Rosario and Frances Ulloa,” Sablan said.

“There are no longer random acts of parental involvement. Instead, there is a shared, solid and continuous approach that  allow parents to be a constant presence in the lives of their children,” she added.
