The new $3 new rate — which is how much illegal taxis charge — will be collected from each passenger headed to a nearby area.
But the rate for Garapan to San Antonio, Capitol Hill, Dandan or Puerto Rico is $5.
From Garapan to Kagman the fare will be $8.
Syed said they’re hoping that the new rates will help eliminate illegal taxis on Saipan.
“We want to discourage people from patronizing illegal taxis which have no insurance for their passengers,” he added.
Syed said legitimate taxis are “struggling” but they have to work harder to help “fight” illegal taxis that are not paying taxes to the cash-strapped CNMI government.
Their fleet of taxi units has also adopted a communication network so passengers can call if they need a ride, he said.
Their number is 285-5549.
Currently, their group has 20 taxi units, Syed said.
“We are confident that we provide the best service in the community because we are a legitimate, law-abiding and taxpaying group,” he added.
