Chamber’s 4th Holiday tourney greets 70 golfers

Proceeds from the seasonal event went to the SCC’s scholarship program and approximately $5,000 was raised to fund the Chamber’s educational efforts for 2012.

Despite not besting the previous tournament, SCC President Douglas Brennan was grateful for this year’s success.

“Even during these tough economic times, the Saipan business community’s Christmas spirit prevailed. A little smaller than last year’s event, we still had a great time and raised funds for our future leaders. We genuinely thank all those companies and volunteers that made our event the obvious success it was,” he said in Saturday’s awards ceremony.

JJ Atalig and Joey Dela Cruz topped the Men’s Low Gross Category, followed by Jason Yi and Park Joung Hoon and third ranked Thompson and King.

Jeff Taylor and Adam Hardwicke were the Men’s Low Net champions while the pairs of Ned Norita and Joe Saures and Ed Manibusan and Nick Sablan placed second and third, respectively.

Jeon Mi Ae and Lee Young Hi ruled the Women’s Low Net category and Noriko Togawa and Terry Guerrero won second place. Sherlyn Jones and Lorraine Babauta reached the ladies’ top three while Abe Kimiko and Masayo Miyamoto settled for fourth.

“No golf tournament I’ve seen is without its controversy,” mentioned SCC Executive Director Richard Pierce in a press release.

“This year’s was no exception. Due to a score card tabulation error, SCC decided to award an additional $200 to a fourth place finisher in the women’s division. The ladies division winners were accidentally initially omitted, so SCC threw in another $200. Noriko Togawa graciously returned $300 of her $600 prize money, while one ladies team refused to return a portion of their winnings after the error was discovered. Our priorities are with the students we raise this money to further their education,” he added.

Meanwhile, winners received an airline ticket, cash, and gas vouchers in contests for closest-to-the-pin and the longest drive.

“SCC thanks our Hole-In-One sponsors — Bank of Hawaii, Triple J Motors, AON Insurance, Century Insurance, and Takagi and Associates. We thank Delta Air Lines for their round-trip tickets,” added Brennan.

The Chamber thanks its individual hole sponsors: Marianas Pacific Distributors, Safety 1st CNMI, Inc., First Hawaiian Bank, D&Q Saipan, IP&E, Data Dot, Saipan Shipping Company, TakeCare Insurance, DFS Galleria, Toothworks, Tan Holdings Corporation, Marianas Cable Vision, IT&E, and Pacific Islands Club.
