The Saipan community welcomed back with open arms the members of Island Trybe. They have been playing music in Tacoma, Washington for the past 10 years. David “YD” Quitugua and his brother Matthew Quitugua “BOI – Beatz on Instink” were born and bred on Guam. “It’s home. This is the only way we know how to give back,” said YD.
By the time the concert began at 6 p.m., it was almost impossible to find a parking spot at PIC. People were even parking across the street. Security was tight and the place was filled with fans who had been listening to them from day one and those who happily just stumbled upon them on the radio.
Everyone under 21 were tagged separately from those over 21 to ensure everyone’s safety. However, fans enjoyed the open view and the opportunity to meet and greet the bands performing. Performing alongside them were Tacoma’s Jay Sway and DJ Boboy. Also Saipan’s very own Fatal Hitz, RoccJuan, Latte Vibes, 6se7nh0, Tom Basa Jr., and DJ Big Ken Camacho. The event was hosted by “The Fina Sisu Mestisu” LJ Castro.
T-Shirts and albums were available for purchase at the concert. Everyone was kept at high energy by the banging beats and the giveaway prices from Borderline and Docomo Pacific.
“We’d like to thank everyone who supported us; Power99, Tha Trapp, United Nesia, Docomo Pacific,” said David while Matthew chorused in between his responses with, “my daughter, my wife, Jesus, Rob, our fans, Justin Bieber” — laughter — “Fatal Hitz, Bordeline and everybody. We do this for our boys who passed away last year.”
The band headed to Guam Sunday.
