“As a kid, I was competing in the academic challenge bowls while other kids were playing with blocks. In eighth grade, I represented all the U.S. Pacific territories in the National Geographic Bee. At the same time, I was actively involved in mock trial, in which I was named best lawyer and best witness three years later. In 2010, my design won first place at the first DEQ Eco-Fashion Show. I joined glee last year and our team was top 20 in the nation and now I’m the Student Council president,” stated Orsini when asked about his achievements.
As StuCo president, Orsini’s main goal is to have a covered hallway from the classrooms to the cafeteria, “A lot of times, when it’s raining, students don’t eat lunch because of the bad weather. When you are hungry, you lose focus in your classes,” he said.
As a teenager, Orsini’s focus is not only in his academics but also his friends. As a student leader of a school with a population of 1,500 teenagers, he admits that it’s been difficult trying to handle both: “It’s hard juggling work and friends but I learned a long time ago that time management is the key.”
He says, “It’s about doing what you are truly passionate about. I do it because I enjoy doing it and when you have a job that you love, it’s like you’re not working at all.”
Another one of Orsini’s objectives is to create a Marianas High School chant. “I think a Dolphin chant would motivate students, not just for this year, but for years to come.” He wanted this to be his legacy to his school along with a few others he’s cooking up. “I want to decorate the school in every spirit week.” He stresses the importance of showing school spirit and letting the students “experience the feeling of the holidays.”
When asked about his plans after high school, he says he’s not pursuing a political career. “I just want a job where I can still be active in the community. I don’t really care about being recognized or anything. Just helping is enough, I think.”
Orsini aims for this year to be successful and one of the most memorable. “MHS is the largest school on Saipan but it’s also the oldest school, which is why we need support from everybody to invest in the education of 1500 people every year. I hope I can leave MHS a better school and I hope that I can look back and say ‘I was there.’”
Orsini hopes to attend George Washington University in D.C. after graduating from high school. He is currently taking Advanced Placement classes in Northern Marianas College.
