Gov’t should protect consumers from faulty appliances, says former lawmaker

Fejeran,  who represented Precinct 1 as a Republican in the 6th House of Representatives, said he lost his ice box and other appliances when they burned down after only eight months of use because they operated on 50 hertz while the U.S. standard is 60 HZ.

Fejeran recalled introducing a bill that would have prohibited sub-standard electric-based devices from entering the CNMI.

But the measure was not passed,  he added.

Fejeran said current lawmakers should pass legislation to “safeguard” the consumers.

He said he learned that an appliance will not operate efficiently and safely if used on anything other than its intended frequency.

Fejeran said he is also asking the Office of the Attorney General through its consumer protection unit to look into the continued entry of sub-standard power-based devices.

“We should inform the public to stop buying these kind of faulty and inappropriate devices,” he added.
