BREAKING NEWS: Rebates out

He told reporters that the checks are in the mail and were processed according to the filing dates of the tax returns, which means those who filed them early will be the first ones to get their checks.

Inos estimated that about 1,000 checks amounting to $1 million of the total $7 million to $8 million in rebates have been released.

“We are running checks now. We are trying to complete all the checks for the tax returns that were filed through March 31,” he said, adding that the Department of Finance will release checks every other week. The next batch will be for tax returns filed from April 1 to 15.

Inos said when he earlier told the media that the rebates would be released no later than December, he meant that by that month they should have completed the release of all the checks.

Those who filed their returns as of March 31 should expect to get their checks anytime soon. Those who filed theirs on April 15 and on later dates, may get their checks in the next couple of weeks.

“We are thankful to the taxpayers who have given us the time and patience that they had during the past months,” Inos said. “We were happy to release the advance child tax credit in time for school opening as we know that was a very important source of funding for the parents. And of course that helped the kids. Now we are into the second phase of the project which is to issue out stimulus refunds or rebates which will be based on the dates of filing.”

They have a total of 12,000 checks to release in batches, he added.
