Santos: Drug test everybody

Santos, Ind.-Rota, said it is incumbent upon them to recognize their responsibility as leaders of the CNMI.

She said lawmakers must be held to a higher standard and be accountable for their contribution to the performance of the Legislature.

“Our elected leaders are looked upon as role models and should lead by example,” Santos said in an interview yesterday.

She noted that when applying for any position in the government, an applicant is notified of the  requirement to undergo a drug test. If the candidate’s test result is positive for the presence of a tested drug, without a legitimate explanation, then the offer of employment will be withdrawn.

The Senate, she noted, has a “Senate Fit For Work Policy” that requires each member to submit to a drug test within 90 days after the second Monday in January following a general election year.

According to Santos’ resolution, “To help restore the public’s confidence in our elected leaders and to align themselves with other constituents that are obligated to submit to a drug test prior to employment will reflect positively as role models and will promote a drug-free workplace; the House of Representatives respectfully requests that each member of the House of Representatives of the 17th CNMI Legislature willfully submit to a drug test within 20 days.”
