PDM Promoters president Misako Kamata said their group, which consisted of over 40 volunteers, collected over 700 cigarette butts.
Kamata said their group was divided into teams of five individuals.
PDM Promoters Inc. conducts a regular cleanup around the Paseo de Marianas tourist district every first or second Saturday of the month but it doesn’t usually keep a tally of each individual trash it collects.
Kamata said last Saturday was different because the report was for the international coastal cleanup data card.
The volunteers were asked to tally the debris they collected in different categories including shoreline and recreational activities, and included paper and plastic bags, balloons, plastic and beverage cans and bottles, caps and lids, kitchenware, food wrappers and other debris.
The volunteers also collected trash from ocean/waterway activities that included debris from recreational/commercial fishing boat and vessel operations like bait containers and packaging, rope, oil and lube bottles, smoking related-activities including cigar tips, tobacco packaging and wrappers, trash from dumping activities like building materials, and trash from medical and personal hygiene debris like diapers, barbeque sticks and even used condoms.
PDM Promoters. volunteers were among the hundreds who joined the international coastal cleanup on Saturday. For the past years, Saipan’s volunteers from different groups and organizations have become a part of the nearly nine million volunteers from all over the world that rid the seas and waters of trash each year.
“Once again we thank our regular volunteers who help us keep the place clean every month, and we welcome those who are interested to join us in our monthly cleanup,” Kamata said.
