Health inspector Rosalia Kapileo-Igisaiar said the restaurant was ordered closed at 12:15 p.m. and will be opened until it complies with the bureau’s order.
She said they received a picture of the food that had a small cockroach in it.
Igisaiar said they went to the restaurant right away to investigate.
“There is evidence of live cockroaches around,” Igisaiar said. Cockroaches in such establishments, she added, are considered health hazards.
Aside from the presence of insects, she added, the restaurant’s kitchen needed thorough cleaning. Moreover, the number of certifications for food handlers was insufficient, she said.
Igisaiar said of the 11 employees only eight had food handler certificates but all were expired.
These constituted violations of the sanitary regulations, she added.
The inspector said she talked with the restaurant’s accountant who was also in-charge of the establishment, and explained that the bureau had to temporarily suspend the restaurant’s operation until it could comply with health regulations.
A family member of a government official and her co-employees had lunch at Coffee Care on Tuesday. They found the insect in the food.
They took a photo, posted it on Facebook and showed it to the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp.
One of the restaurant’s staffers told Variety in a telephone interview that they never learned about the incident until yesterday.
The only violation the health inspector mentioned was the malfunctioning kitchen equipment, the staffer said.
