San Antonio school concludes cultural celebration with Parker Yobei

Yobei was invited to perform as part of the school benchmark on Chamorro, Carolinian Language Heritage Studies.

Event coordinator Nolyn Villagomez said benchmark 3.2.1 includes cultural stories, songs, rhymes, chants, legends and myths.

It was his third time to join the cultural heritage celebration at San Antonio, Yobei said.

“The kids are my inspiration because they are always full of joy. They always think positive things and working with them is like being taken to their world,” he said.

Yobei performed 14 songs, including original compositions.

BJ John, a fourth grader, was one of those who danced to Yobei’s music on stage. He said he enjoyed the program.

As early as 9 a.m., teachers were already bringing their students to the stage which was decorated with miniature cultural houses and attires.

The program was very successful and the children had fun, school principal James Sablan said.

He said the parents were also very supportive.

This week, he said, he will be meeting with the teachers to evaluate the survey they conducted so they can improve next year’s celebration.
