Guam road construction to start along Route 7A

The site is located between the Hagåtña Pool and the Agana Shopping Center and leads up to the Route 8 traffic intersection in Maite.

The project was awarded to Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Company and costs approximately $4.7 million. The expected completion date is May 2012.

The project is comprised of five phases and will require lane changes and restrictions throughout the course of construction.

Carl Dominguez, during a presentation before the Rotary Club of Northern Guam, said the project is simply to make the road smoother for travel.

“That involves improvements of the intersection up at Maite, the traffic intersection of Route 8 and Route 7A all the way down to the traffic light (at Route 4),” he said. “The road won’t be widened. There will be resurfacing.”

The changes include the elimination of the speed bump motorists encounter when going over the Minondo Bridge.

“There will also be improvements to the drainage. There will be sidewalks. It’s essentially just rebuilding the road to make it safer, smoother and to improve traffic,” he said.

Motorists are advised to expect delays and seek alternative routes when travelling in the area. For the first five months, there will be just one lane coming down the hill from Route 8.

Dominguez said another project slated to start in the upcoming months is the Cabras Island Road or Route 11 project awarded to Core Tech, which is being funded by the Department of Defense through the Federal Highway Administration.

As the project gets underway, Dominguez said the rehabilitation of the Hagåtña Bridge next to Paseo Loop will start. There is no specific date on when the two road construction projects will begin.

“At the same time we’re doing that, we’re going to improve Marine Corps Drive and Route 8 so that there will be two left-turn lanes on Marine Corps Drive,” he said. This after nearly 30 years of motorists making only a right turn on to Route 1.
