Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan took his opinion one-step further and introduced H.R. 2236: the Wildlife Refuge System Conservation Semipostal Stamp Act of 2011.
The U.S. House Natural Resources Committee approved the bill last Thursday with unanimous consent and directs the U.S. Postal Service to issue and sell a semipostal stamp which costs a few cents more.
The extra money generated from the sale of the premium stamp would be directed to the Fish and Wildlife Service National Wildlife Refuge System of public lands and waters set aside to conserve America’s fish, wildlife and plants started in 1903.
The CNMI counts two national wildlife refuges within its boundaries including the Mariana Arc of Fire — 21 undersea mud volcanoes and thermal vents —and the Mariana Trench, regarded as the world’s oldest sea floor.
