16 schools join Christmas tree decorating contest

Sonia Siwa of  PDM Promoters Inc. said  they opened slots for 15 participants but were able to accommodate one more at the last minute during the deadline for registration on Tuesday.

This year’s contestants are Golden Harvest International School, Koblerville Elementary School, Green Meadow School, William S. Reyes Elementary School, Dandan Elementary School, Joshua Generation International Academy, Garapan Elementary School, Kagman Elementary School, Saipan Seventh Day Adventist School, San Antonio Elementary School, Brilliant Star School, Tanapag Elementary School, Grace Christian Academy, Oleai Elementary School, Agape Christian School and Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School.

“We are happy all the slots are filled,” Siwa said.

The  schools must decorate  9-foot Christmas trees using recycled materials like empty soda cans, water bottles, used paper, Styrofoam among other things at the Paseo de Marianas on Nov. 30.

Siwa said as in the previous years, the trees will be judged based on relevance to the theme, attractiveness, creativity and design, and durability by selected judges on Dec. 1, which falls on a street market day.

“The contestants always decorate the trees the day before the judging, and they can do some last-minute touch-up of the final details before the judges go around,” Siwa said.

The winning school will win up to $5,000.

On Dec. 1, PDM Promoters Inc. will also light up its giant Christmas tree at the middle of the Paseo de Marianas each year.

The 30-foot tree is made up of recycled materials. Each year, locals and tourists can write their Christmas wishes on strips of colored ribbons and tie the ribbons at the foot of the Christmas tree.
