PSS celebrates Education Month

The theme, logo and essay competitions saw the participation of all PSS students on Saipan, Tinian and Rota. Yesterday Education Commissioner Rita A. Sablan, her leadership team and the Education Month Committee announced the 12 winners.

The theme for this month’s celebration was from Oleai Elementary School 5th grade student, Jerlyn Singeo: “Education: Shaping our Life, Our World and our Future.”

Second place was Dayna Cabrera, 5th grade student of William S. Reyes Elementary School, while third place went to Autumn Camacho, 4th grade student of Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School.

For the logo competition, the colorful depiction of a school community by Marianas High School 9th grader Nina Valerio won the top prize. Second place was Hopwood Jr. High School 8th grade  student Patrick Cloyd L. Agustin, while another MHS student, Milagros King, placed third.

The essay competition was divided into two categories: elementary and secondary levels.

WSR Elementary School’s Stephen Carino, 6th grade, won first prize while GTC Elementary School’s Miguel Aninon, 6th grade, came in second. Oleai Elementary School’s Jerry-Lyn Singeo, 6th grade took the third spot.

In the secondary level, Hopwood Junior High School’s Hannah F.S. Hofschneider, 8th grade,  won the top spot while MHS 11th grade student Ronnie San Nicolas came in second. Chacha Oceanview Jr. High School’s Ha’ane Eugenio, 7th grade, won third prize.

During its regular meeting on Oct. 14, the Board of Education designated November as Education Month and Nov. 23 as Education Day.

This annual celebration is highlighted with various activities held throughout the 20 Saipan, Tinian and Rota PSS campuses along with the  10 Head Start Centers.

During the month, the schools will honor their staff of the year: teacher of the year, teacher aide of the year, and instructor of the year.

On Nov. 23, the CNMI-wide winners  in each category will be announced.
