Healthy recipes for healthier lifestyles

The CNMI recently joined the first National Food Day in October 24 to encourage the community to eat and prepare food in their homes using local ingredients. The main goal is to urge people to start the road to better health and help reduce the high numbers of diabetes, obesity and other illnesses caused by an unhealthy diet.

Here are a few starter recipes to experiment with. These are taken from the collection of nutritious recipes  put together by the Northern Marianas College Cooperative Research, Extension & Education Service.

The recipe collection includes desserts and snacks, soups, stews and entrées, stir fries, sides and salads, and Women, Infant and Children or WIC recipes. They have been taken and modified from the Lifeskills in Food Education Curriculum from the University of Hawaii.

CNMI Women, Infant and Children nutritionist and program coordinator Erin Angela Camacho earlier said that they would be coming up with more recipes whose ingredients can be bought locally from the grocery stores and from the local farmers at the Sabalu and Tuesday markets.

Copies of the recipes are available at the WIC Clinic on Navy Hill during office hours. For more information about the WIC and its programs, please call 664-4084.
