The new doctors are two internists, an endocrinologist, and an anesthesiologist. They recently joined the Guam Memorial Hospital Authority and several local clinics.
Guam welcomes back Dr. Hyo Ji and Dr. Erika Masuda who left to study off-island and have returned because “Guam is our home.” Dr. Ji and Dr. Masuda practice anesthesiology and endocrinology, respectively. Dr. Ji is on staff at the Guam Surgery Center while Dr. Masuda practices at the American Medical Center.
Another new doctor to Guam, Dr. Felix Cabrera, is from the Northern Marianas, and currently on staff at GMHA as an internist and also on the staff of PMC Isla Clinic. Dr. Lilybeth Sistoza is from the Philippines and is an internist practicing at Tumon Medical Clinic.
Other than Dr. Cabrera, all three have applied for credentials at GMHA.
All physicians are aware of the challenges Guam faces, and when asked how they can help change this, Dr. Cabrera replied: “one patient at a time.”
Last Thursday, the four were guests on the Island Doctors Show hosted by Dr. Vince Akimoto and sponsored by the Guam Medical Association.
Dr. Akimoto said with the shortage of skilled medical professionals on Guam and in the region, and rampant diseases such as diabetes, heart attacks, strokes and cancer on the rise, the four new doctors are very much needed.
Akimoto also described them as “bright, new medical stars.”
