Group looking for Japan reconstruction volunteers

Tohoku and Morioka in Iwate prefecture sustained tremendous damage and have not fully recovered, according to Yoichi Matsumura of the NMI-Japan Disaster Relief organization.

She said Holiday Tour Micronesia of Guam, in collaboration with the Morioka branch office of Kinki Nippon Tourist Co. Ltd. of Japan, is soliciting individuals willing to perform volunteer work in those areas.

Gordon I. Marciano of Pacific Development Inc. said if there are  at least 20 volunteers on Saipan, they will represent the CNMI, but if the number is smaller the volunteers can join the Guam team.

He could not tell what specific work the volunteers will be undertaking in Japan, but  added that “there is a lot of work needed to be done.”

A social workers association in Japan will  brief the volunteers, he said.

Volunteers will have to pay for their airfare, lodgings and meals, and their work will last for five days.

Matsumura said the roundtrip airfare offered by Continental Airlines is around $440 plus tax and oil surcharge for a total of about $650.

Twin rooms are available for volunteers and will include meals.

A single room is also available for an additional cost.
