MVA Managing Director Perry Tenorio said they are aware of the sad plight of the viewing deck on the island’s highest point.
“The place is frequented by visitors and tourists, but the railings have been loose and rusting and needed repairs,” Tenorio said.
He said the project, which is spearheaded by the Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands, costs about $60,000, including the design and the construction but the constructor agreed to a discounted cost of $48,000.
Tenorio said the available cash for the project is $27,000. This came from HANMI which donated $20,000, the Saipan Chamber of Commerce which came up with $5,000, and the Rotary Club of Saipan which donated $2,000 as part of the proceeds from the recent 16th Tournament of Champions.
“We’ll take this concept of partnership with the public not only for the Tapochao renovation project but also for other areas on Saipan, Tinian and Rota,” Tenorio said.
Also providing assistance to the Mt. Tapochao rehabilitation project are the Japan Saipan Travel Association, Korean tour operators and Chinese tour operators.
