Guam Labor federally recognized

The U.S. Department of Labor on Wednesday announced the formal recognition of GDOL as the state apprenticeship agency authorized to oversee the island’s registered apprenticeship system.

U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis stated: “Guam’s now federally registered apprenticeship program will expand career pathways that lead to good jobs for the territory’s workforce.”

In July, Gov. Eddie B. Calvo submitted formal documentation requesting the Employment and Training Administration to identify Guam’s labor department as the agency to facilitate apprenticeship programs and agreements.

“We’re finding every way to bring career opportunities to as many Guamanians as possible,” said Calvo.

“We’re finding every way to enhance the workforce with high-paying jobs for Guamanians.”

According to GDOL, Guam’s participation in the registered apprenticeship system will support its efforts to improve opportunities for the local workforce through its “earn and learn” model, which prepares participants for highly skilled careers while allowing them to earn a paycheck.

The Employment and Training Administration’s Office of Apprenticeship also formally recognized apprenticeship agencies in 25 states and the District of Columbia.
