PDM volunteers collect 580 lbs of trash in Garapan

Sonia Siwa of  PDM Promoters Inc. yesterday said the team was made up of PDM Promoters Inc. and Kinpachi Restaurant staffers as well as volunteers.

Siwa said the Division of Environmental Quality provided trash bags and gloves while D&Q supplied refreshments for the volunteers.

For the past years, PDM Promoters has been conducting a regular cleanup on the first or second Saturday each month and has collected thousands of pounds of trash from around the area.

The group starts from the road near Winchell’s and work their way toward Coral Tree Avenue, around the Paseo de Marianas, toward the fire station and end in front of American Memorial Park.

Siwa said in addition to the regular volunteers, they also get a number of tourists who help whenever they are on island.

“We have some Japanese tourists who would go out with us and help in the cleanup from time to time,” she said.

The trash collected usually includes cigarette butts, soda cans and bottles, discarded tires, commercial and residential garbage.

PDM initiated the regular monthly cleanup and included students and children to teach them environmental awareness and the importance of keeping the place as clean and tourist-friendly as possible.

Volunteers are welcome to join the monthly cleanups. For more information, call 234-6900.
