Public urged to attend budget hearing on restoration of library hours

The hearing starts at 9 a.m. and will be held at the library.

Library executive director John O. Gonzales said Joeten-Kiyu Public Library wants to better serve the public beginning Oct. 1, 2011.

The hearing will be conducted by the Senate Fiscal Affairs and House Ways and Means committees.

Gonzales said the public hearing was supposed to be held in the House chamber on Capital Hill.

“We are thankful that they agreed to hold the hearing at the library so it is more accessible to the public. We urge everyone to come, lobby and support us so we could go back to having more hours of serving the community,” he added.

Gonzales said they would like to restore the library hours to 40 hours a week instead of the current 32 hours, and adjust library hours to open and close late so members of the public who get out of work at 5 p.m. can still avail of the library resources.

“What use is a library if it’s closed and has only a few hours to serve its constituents each week? Library resources should be available to students and to everybody whenever they need it,” Gonzales said.

The Joeten-Kiyu Public Library is closed on Tuesdays due to the government’s austerity measures. It also adjusted its hours on Wednesdays, opening at 11 a.m. and closing at 7 p.m. instead of 5 p.m.
