Salvation Army to start 2011 Christmas Kettle Season on Friday

CNMI Salvation Army ministry leader Wayne Gillespie said the 2011 Christmas Kettle Season Schedule will run throughout the Christmas holiday season and end on Dec. 24.

“Our primary kettle site will be Joeten Superstore (formerly Price Costco) and our kettle ringers will also have food boxes beside their kettles, for those who wish to donate non-perishable food,” Gillespie said.

The Salvation Army will also be conducting the annual Toy Drive.

For the Angel Tree Program this year, Gillespie said the Bank of Hawaii will be one of the sponsors. He is urging other groups interested in becoming Angel Tree Sponsors to contact the Salvation Army.

For the Angel Tree Program, Gillespie invites local stores, banks and other establishments to set up and decorate Christmas trees and ask their customers to donate Christmas gifts for the less fortunate by placing their gifts under the Angel Tree.

“We invite churches, schools and interested groups to contact us for information on how to conduct food and toy drives. The Salvation Army is always in need of food donations, in order to supply our food assistance programs, and the food drives conducted during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays are important because they shore up dwindling supplies,” Gillespie said.

“The Kettle Ringers will greet you with ‘happy holidays’ through Dec. 3 because that time frame is closer to Thanksgiving than Christmas.  They will switch to ‘Merry Christmas’ after that,” he added.

On Thursday, the Salvation Army will be hosting a Thanksgiving dinner for low-income families and for everyone else who would like to join from noon at the Minachom Atdao pavilion in Susupe.
