Liberation Committee heads to Guam

Today, Liberation Committee treasurer Terry Camacho will leave for Guam ahead of the panel officials.

Camacho said they received an invitation from Guam Gov. Eddie B. Calvo for the island’s 67th Liberation Day festivities which started on June 11 and will end on July 21.

Camacho said they will look at how the Guam Liberation Day Committee generates revenue.

One of Guam’s income-generating activities is a casino.

“Gambling is prohibited on Guam but they have a law that exempts Liberation festivities,” Camacho said.

She said she is interested to know how Guam “legalized” a casino for the Liberation festivities before she discusses the issue with Saipan lawmakers.

The mayor’s office of Saipan had applied for a permit to hold gambling activities at the Liberation activity center but the Attorney General’s Office  rejected it.

Liberation Day Committee chairman Jonas Barcinas and concessionaire chairwoman Larissa Flores will leave on Tuesday with 2011 Liberation Queen Joni Castro.

Flores said they will meet with the Liberation Day Committee on Guam to exchange notes regarding marketing the festivities.

“We would like to know how to bring in more people and  generate more revenue,” she said.

Camacho said they would also explore the possibility of inviting the Guam Liberation Queen to join in Saipan’s festivities next year.

This was not realized this year because of financial constraints, she added.
